Red Matters

Giles Oakley has been a Manchester United fan for over 50 years, following the reds since the Munich Air Disaster, with tales about the club going back to the 1950s. Did you know two United players attacked fans from the crowd long before Eric Cantona or that United players were probably involved in match-fixing in the 1960s? Would you like eye-witness reports from United games involving the likes of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton? Other chapters include: The best goal I saw Law score, The redemption of Eric Cantona, How Albert Scanlon kept the red flag flying high, The best save I saw a United goalie make and El Beatle, amongst others.

Paddy Crerand has written the foreword for this unique United book and spoke highly of Giles’ work. I think it’s terrific that people like Giles Oakley dedicate so much time to telling the club’s tale. There’s no limit to the amount of knowledge and stories people want to hear about Manchester United, and people like Giles help to quench that incredible thirst.

The Guardian’s chief football writer, Daniel Taylor, has also endorsed the book. “Red Matters is a wonderful piece of writing and history, benefiting from eye-witness reports from the 1960s. Essential for the Manchester United supporter who wants to know, and understand, the history of the club.”
